25,000 FREE BOOKS, EARLY LITERACY GUIDES & CONES TO FAMILIES
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Oct. 4, 2013 – Arizona McDonald’s restaurants and Read On Arizona, a statewide public/private collaborative working to improve literacy, are partnering to host Family Reading Day on Saturday, November 2, to encourage families to pick up a book and read together!
Beginning at 1 p.m., the first 100 families that visit their local McDonald’s restaurant, will receive a FREE Scholastic book (toddler to 6th grade), ice cream cone and Read On Arizona Early Literacy Guide for Families to help support their child’s reading. A total of 25,000 books and early literacy guides will be given away to families at Arizona McDonald’s restaurants. The FREE book offer excludes Walmart and mall McDonald’s restaurant locations.
Mayors with Read On Greater Phoenix, Read On Goodyear, Read On Flagstaff, Read On Yuma and Read On Tucson will be helping kick-off Family Reading Day by reading a book to children at their local McDonald’s restaurant.
In addition, reading screenings will be available, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at several McDonald’s restaurant locations throughout Arizona. Visit McDonald’s Facebook page at community.mcdonalds.com/phoenix for McDonald’s book giveaway and reading screening locations.
“Read On Arizona is thrilled McDonald’s is raising awareness about the importance of reading by celebrating Family Reading Day throughout the state,” said Terri Clark, Arizona Literacy Director, for Read On Arizona. “The implementation of Arizona’s third grade retention policy (Move On When Reading) this year makes a day like Family Reading Day more important than ever; it is everyone’s responsibility to help connect families to books and reading resources so that together we can improve the literacy skills of Arizona’s children.”
“We know many Arizona families have a lack of access to books,” Michelle Slayton, president of McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association of Phoenix and Northern Arizona. “We’re delighted to partner with Read On Arizona to provide these valuable resources to help children improve their reading skills.”
