Successes Made by Arizona’s Children

AzMERIT 3rd Grade ELA Scores Show Gains

Arizona saw a 3 point gain in percent of ALL 3rd grade students passing AzMERIT English Language Arts (ELA) from 41% (2016) to 44% (2017).


2017 AzMerit ELA For All 3rd Grade Students:

44% of 3rd graders scored in the proficient or highly proficient category (38,583 students)

12% of 3rd graders scored in the partially proficient category (10,522 students)

44% of 3rd graders scored in the minimally proficient category (38,583 students)

Arizona saw a 3 point gain in percent of economically disadvantaged 3rd grade students passing AzMERIT ELA from 29% (2016) to 32% (2017).


2017 AzMERIT ELA for Economically Disadvantaged 3rd Grade Students:

32% of 3rd graders scored in the proficient or highly proficient category (14,436 students)

13% of 3rd graders scored in the partially proficient category (5,865 students)

55% of 3rd graders scored in the minimally proficient category (24,812 students)


Things to Take Notice of:

  • Gap stayed the same for our most disadvantaged subgroups meaning all subgroups made a similar rate of increase. We did not see an accelerated increase for key subgroups.
  • The same percent of 3rd grade students scored in the minimally proficient as scored in the proficient/highly proficient. (44%= 38,583 students)
